Understanding the Parking Tax
Drivers renting parking spaces in Manhattan are subject to an 18.375% tax, which includes an 8% NYC surcharge tax.
Eligibility for Tax Exemption
You may be exempt from the 8% NYC surcharge if you meet the following criteria:
- Your primary residence is in Manhattan.
- You own or lease a vehicle for personal use.
- The vehicle is registered in your name at your primary Manhattan address.
- You park in a rented parking space in Manhattan on a monthly basis or longer.
How to Apply
Step 1: Purchase a monthly parking pass at parkfast.com. Purchase of one full month at the full tax rate is required. Note that no refunds can be issued for tax exemption retroactively.
Step 2: Obtain the DCA license number of the location. This number can be found on:
- The location's rate board
- Tickets issued at the location
- By emailing customercare@parkfast.com
Step 3: Complete the online application and wait for a response.
Step 4: Once you receive your documents, send an email to customercare@parkfast.com with the subject line: "Manhattan Tax Exemption." Include:
- The name on your parkfast.com account
- Your 26-digit access card number
- An attachment of the tax-exempt form you received
Reminder: As you approach your 2-year renewal, you will receive an email from us when your documentation is about to expire, along with instructions on how to renew and where to upload your renewal document.
Benefits of the Exemption
Qualified individuals will pay a reduced parking tax of 10.375% instead of the standard 18.375%.
Certificate Validity
Once issued, the Manhattan Resident Parking Tax Certificate of Exemption is valid for one parking facility for two years. If you have multiple vehicles registered in your name, you may add them to your certificate.
Renewals
Renewal applications are mailed to recipients before the current expiration date and must be completed and returned to the Department of Finance (DOF) by August 31. If there are no changes to your address, car, or garage information, you can renew the exemption online. If there are changes to your address, car, or garage information, you can either:
- Fill out and return the application you were mailed
- Renew online and submit the required documentation as an attachment during the online renewal process
Also, you must email the completed tax exemption documentation to customercare@parkfast.com with the subject line: “Manhattan Tax Exemption,” prior to the August 31 deadline to avoid the 8% surcharge. Please note that tax exemptions cannot be issued retroactively.
Important Notice
Please note that fines and penalties apply to anyone who improperly obtains or misuses a certificate.
